Shoes 'n' Boots of the Week: Division Road x White's, Horsebutt 145s from Viberg, Grant Stone Shell

We’ve got a lean roundup this week, but it’s stacked—a brand new White’s chukka pattern in collaboration with Division Road, eight new stitchdown horsebutt makeups from Viberg, an upcoming Grant Stone shell pre-order, and plenty more.

Division Road x White’s Semi-Dress Chukka in Olive Waxed Flesh: $865

The last project from White’s and Division Road: a chukka fit for the temperate rainforests of the Pacific Northwest. This is a new pattern, adapted from White’s Goodyear-welted chukka, but modified to borrow the quarter stitching from their iconic Semi-Dress boot and to support a single row of hand sewn stitchdown. Speaking of quarters, these are (deceptively) unlined—but you’ve still got the smooth grain side of the Waxed Flesh in there.

Viberg Roper in Cuoio Horsebutt: $1,400

Viberg dropped a ton of new horsebutt this week, both directly and through Withered Fig—so here goes a quick run through the highlights. Their short-shafted roper patten is back, complete with double-row stitchdown construction and a lightweight Vibram Morflex wedge, all built around the 2000 last, and E width last described as having a wide toe and a high instep.

After all these years it should be very clear how we feel about the 145 Oxford (if you’re new: extremely good). This stitchdown version is no exception, and—like the rest of the boots in the limited release—they’re are clicked from Cuoio Horsebutt, which we feel obligated to mention is extremely Domeable…

1035 last on these, which we haven’t seen a ton of on Viberg oxfords in a while.

The exact date hasn’t been announced yet, but Grant Stone’s next shell preorder is coming up. This time, the rise and fall of the rainbow wheel of shell colors has landed on Garnet—one of Horween’s lighter colorways, with lots of red undertones. The 2 Monkeys Randonneé in Brown: $780

While there are tons of boots inspired by American western, work, and military boots from the mid-20th century, Michiya Suzuki looks a little further afield. His brand, The 2 Monkeys, leans heavily on rarer and often stranger European or turn of the century patterns. The Randonnèe (which Google translate seems to think mean “hiking” in French) is based on outdoor adaptions of early athletic footwear, and constructed with a 360˚ flat welt on a last roughly derived from the Munson. Franklin & Poe x Red Wing Pecos in Copper Rough and Tough: $370

…who happen to have also released a Copper Rough and Tough version of Red Wing’s Pecos Roper, bottomed with a 270˚ flat welt and Vibram Chemigum outsoles.

Supreme x Yuketen Leo in Brown Veg-Tan: $308

A certain skate/streetwear brand turned twenty-teens hype machine that’s collaborated on everything from t-shirts to porcelain, Oreos, and…bricks seems to have set its sights on Yuketen, releasing a collaborative huarache in three colors of veg-tan. We’ve covered the increasing larger cultural influence of quality brands we care about for a while now—engineer boots suddenly existing everywhere, veg-tan appreciation rising, Alden loafers and Paraboot Michaels for all—and this feels like pretty clear confirmation.

The only question is how much that spillover will penetrate beyond the fashion/fashion media landscape into the still-wider world of what most people are wearing. And even more importantly, what survives the game of cultural telephone. High quality leather welted shoes for everyone??? Would be nice! Also unrealistic. But a pipeline that makes it easier for more people to learn about and get their hands on some really good shoes doesn’t feel out of the question.
